Do you drive a vehicle that is over three years old? If you do, you probably need a Class IV MOT certificate. These certificates are for the majority of vehicles on the road, that is, vehicles that are under 3000 kg and have up to a maximum of eight seats. Contact J&W Motors for more details.
Class IV MOTs
Two of the most popular MOT types are Class VII MOTs and Class IV MOTs. Class VII MOTs are for vehicles that are over 3000kg, such as vans for commercial purposes, and Class IV MOTs are for any ordinary vehicle with up to eight seats. But there is still some confusion.
The confusion is in the crossover between Class IV and Class VII; both classes handle small vans; however, a Class IV MOT is used for smaller vans, and Class VII is for ones fitted out to carry heavier loads. Check with your MOT mechanic to find out what Class of MOT you need.
Class IV MOT Tests
All vehicles over three years old must undergo an MOT test, which for most people, means a Class IV MOT. Class IV MOTs cover the majority of vehicles up to 3000 kg and up to eight passenger seats. These vehicles include things like private hire cabs, cars, and small vans.
During a Class IV MOT test, most of the systems and infrastructure of the vehicle are tested. An MOT tester will start with the brakes and wheels and then move onto the exhaust and chassis. They will also check the mirrors, the lights and lamps, the fuel system and the electrical system.
Class IV Legality
New vehicles don’t require an MOT because they have recently rolled off the production line; they have been safety checked and are reliable. After three years, the motoring authorities require an MOT test certificate to ensure that the vehicle is still roadworthy despite the mileage.
If your vehicle is more than three years old in the UK and does not have an MOT certificate, then it does not operate legally. In this case, you are eligible for a fine, penalty, points, and even a ban from driving. Double-check the age of your vehicle and book an MOT with a station today.
Passing and Failing
If you pass your MOT, you will receive a certificate, and your pass will be logged with the MOT database; this means that if you are stopped by the police, and they check your vehicle on the system, it will show up as registered and roadworthy. If you fail, you have some repairs to make.
Failing an MOT is not the end of the world; in fact, it is beneficial for your safety and the safety of other road users. You will be allowed to drive the vehicle to a repair station, or you can leave it with the MOT mechanics if they can carry out the repairs. You will have to pay for another MOT.
